Between 1996 and 2002 she studied painting at the Slade School of Art, London, under the tutelage of Norman and Tom Norris, Jenny Saville, Lucy Jones, Paul Richards, Andrew Stahl, Liz Arnold, Jo Volley and Euan Uglow, amongst others. Helengai also taught at the Royal College of Art.
