    Helengai Harbottle

Helengai Harbottle has been a full time painter for over a decade. Between 1996 and 2002 she studied painting at the Slade School of Art, London, under the tutelage of Norman and Tom Norris, Jenny Saville, Lucy Jones, Paul Richards, Andrew Stahl, Liz Arnold, Jo Volley and Euan Uglow, amongst others. While at the Slade she won the Monnington Prize and spent a semester at the New York Studio School in Manhattan.

Helengai’s move to the Slade marked the end of a successful career as a textile designer in the fashion business where she was known as an innovative pattern maker and colourist (MA Royal College of Art and winner of several awards – Leigh Bowery made a jacket from her final show fabric). Helengai also taught at the Royal College of Art.

Helengai’s most recent solo show was at North House Gallery in Manningtree (April 2019). Other recent exhibitions include solo shows at the Merchant House Gallery in Lowestoft in 2015 and 2017, a two person show at the Cut in Halesworth in 2016, and group shows at North House Gallery (anniversary show, Summer 2019), Brampton Willows (Autumn 2019) and Gallery East in Woodbridge (as part of Surface, Autumn 2019).

Helengai’s painting Dark House was on show in the Inheritance exhibition at Norwich Castle Museum between March and May 2018.

Helengai lives and works in Suffolk and London and has exhibited in Suffolk, Norfolk and London.
